Be Concerned

Be ConcernedThis week I’ve favored the word “melancholy,” not quite feeling sad, not quite feeling happy, not quite sure what I want, conflicted, comfortable, and on edge all at the same time. This melancholy state has allowed me to take a few moments of introspection and reflect upon my goals, my hopes, and my confidence. Hearing the Twenty One Pilots song “Be Concerned” this morning, I felt drawn to the dichotomy of the music: the sense of purity that contrasts with the raw verse of the rap. I listened a couple times, and then before even perceiving that I’d picked up a pen, I’d written a poem.

Thanks for stopping by. If you have a second, check out the archives of all my Twenty One Pilots inspired poetry and give a listen to their music below. Also, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. What are you feeling conflicted about right now?

Solid

SolidThis poem is a blend of old and new, the emotions of past and the verses of now amalgamating into a piece that allows me to reflect and forces me to reinvent the meaning behind the message. In other words, I edited it. As always, thank you for taking a few moments out of your day to stop by She’s in Prison. Don’t be shy; say a quick hello below or shoot me a tweet!

Distraction

DistractionIf you’ve never tried writing under the influence of a song, I highly recommend it. Turn the volume up, hit repeat, and lose your soul for a minute as you let the vibrancy of the melody steal your physical body. Don’t just listen, but absorb. Internalize the lyrics and drum your fingers with the beat as you let your imagination run. What do you see if you close your eyes? A memory?

Write it.

Whatever you feel, just write it.

As per my usual Sunday series inspired by songs on my playlist, today’s poem is inspired by “The Great Escape,” by Boys Like Girls. I’ve been utterly obsessed with this song for about a month. Sure I heard it when it came out years ago, but rediscovering it has deepened my connection beyond the initial admiration of dancing along to a catchy song. Anyway, give a listen below and come back again next week for another round of celebrating the camaraderie of music and poetry.

Indebted

IndebtedLast April I started the Josh Dun Poetry Corner purely for the fun of showcasing my admiration for the band Twenty One Pilots on my own creative platform. The Corner started after I sent Josh a poem via Twitter. I never expected he’d not only read the poem, but respond. Elated, I wrote another poem as a thank you to my favorite drummer for acknowledging my words, and again, I sent it to him. I felt shocked when he responded to that one too.

A few days after Josh and I exchanged tweets, I ran into Twenty One Pilots in my hometown, a random happenstance that prompted me to reveal my identity as the poet to one of my biggest idols. We chatted briefly, a conversation now burned in my memory, and parted ways, back to our separate worlds.

The next week, I took a chance and sent another poem, and miraculously, Josh responded again! And thus, the Josh Dun Poetry Corner was born.

I’ve loved feeling connected with my favorite band and interacting with some of their other fans. The Corner has allowed me to lament my fandom each and every week, all the while growing as a person and perpetuating my admiration for their music. So it’s with a heavy heart that I announce that this edition of the Josh Dun Poetry Corner is the last. I will continue to rock out to TOP and will obviously continue to write poetry inspired by music. Thank you to everyone that’s supported me along this road and thank you to Josh and Tyler for being awesome.

As of now I’m pondering ideas for my new Sunday series on She’s in Prison, so stay tuned for the BIG REVEAL next week!

Failing in Love

Failing in LoveWow, its been far too long since I posted a poem. I sincerely apologize for my absence, but what better way to get back into the spirit of poetry than with verse partially inspired by the music of Twenty One Pilots. Tonight’s Josh Dun Poetry Corner explores the concept of love at first sight, an emotion I felt the second I saw/heard Josh and Tyler on stage for the first time.
