A Car, A Torch, A Death
Now’s the moment when I admit weakness…
I’ve failed to post my regular Saturday series for weeks. I have no excuse, except to say I’m human and anything but perfect. But it’s the new year and time to get back on track.
So, per my usually usual Saturday series, I give you a poem inspired by the title of a Twenty One Pilots’ song. Find the archives of all my TOP titled poetry under my featured tab and as always, give a listen to the band that’s held my hand with interlocked fingers for all of 2013 below.
Indebted
Last April I started the Josh Dun Poetry Corner purely for the fun of showcasing my admiration for the band Twenty One Pilots on my own creative platform. The Corner started after I sent Josh a poem via Twitter. I never expected he’d not only read the poem, but respond. Elated, I wrote another poem as a thank you to my favorite drummer for acknowledging my words, and again, I sent it to him. I felt shocked when he responded to that one too.
A few days after Josh and I exchanged tweets, I ran into Twenty One Pilots in my hometown, a random happenstance that prompted me to reveal my identity as the poet to one of my biggest idols. We chatted briefly, a conversation now burned in my memory, and parted ways, back to our separate worlds.
The next week, I took a chance and sent another poem, and miraculously, Josh responded again! And thus, the Josh Dun Poetry Corner was born.
I’ve loved feeling connected with my favorite band and interacting with some of their other fans. The Corner has allowed me to lament my fandom each and every week, all the while growing as a person and perpetuating my admiration for their music. So it’s with a heavy heart that I announce that this edition of the Josh Dun Poetry Corner is the last. I will continue to rock out to TOP and will obviously continue to write poetry inspired by music. Thank you to everyone that’s supported me along this road and thank you to Josh and Tyler for being awesome.
As of now I’m pondering ideas for my new Sunday series on She’s in Prison, so stay tuned for the BIG REVEAL next week!

Failing in Love
Wow, its been far too long since I posted a poem. I sincerely apologize for my absence, but what better way to get back into the spirit of poetry than with verse partially inspired by the music of Twenty One Pilots. Tonight’s Josh Dun Poetry Corner explores the concept of love at first sight, an emotion I felt the second I saw/heard Josh and Tyler on stage for the first time.
Transformation
Today’s Josh Dun Poetry Corner is a year in review. In looking back at the self that discovered my now favorite band Twenty One Pilots, I feel surprised at the transformation of identity that I’ve undergone as a result of their music. I’m not the same girl anymore, and I’m proud of how far I’ve grown with the help of all those around me, including those talented TOP boys, Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.

Trees
Today’s poem is inspired by the Twenty One Pilots song with the same title, “Trees.” Their version forces me to reflect on the exact emotions I fight to hide from contemplation, but in that reflection I find the purpose to write my own verse and expel the words that imprison my confidence.

The Great Ones
I’ve published a Josh Dun Poetry Corner poem every Sunday since mid-April. I love dedicating my work to those that inspire me, especially a band like Twenty One Pilots that gives so much of themselves to their fans. This week, I felt compelled to write a love note to these guys, declaring my admiration in a promise that my support will never waver, even as I explore the talents of other bands, as my life shifts through stages and my interests skate in different directions. A piece of my soul will always live in the beats of their songs and messages of their lyrics.
I feel lucky to have discovered these boys in the days before their music played on the radio, the days when I could tease their tour manager about how much he looks like Captain America, and the days when I could tweet their drummer a poem and know it didn’t get lost in thousands of other messages sent in the exact same second. But even if they don’t see my poetry anymore or if I can’t get tickets to the shows because the price skyrockets and they sell out before my paycheck clears, I will always remain a true fan, thankful and jealous of their talent, and eager to spend money on any and all new music they produce.

Car Radio
Tonight’s poem is titled after the Twenty One Pilots song “Car Radio,” as part of my normal Saturday Series–poetry inspired by the titles of all TOP tracks (check out the ARCHIVES HERE). I don’t often speak to the meaning of my verse, but tonight I will admit that I wrote this one exactly 2 minutes ago under the influence of raw emotion. This one’s a true story and an utterly honest depiction of my drive home from work today.

The Click
I remember the first moment I saw Twenty One Pilots. Their music resonated with me before Tyler even started singing. But even more amazing is the camaraderie I’ve discovered with so many other people because of this one commonality, friends from other countries met via social media or at local St. Louis vegetarian restaurants, all sharing a respect for two boys in a band from Columbus, Ohio.
